Edith Rice Waring, born in Liberty, in 1925, died at the age of 94, on Feb. 7, 2020 in Gulfport. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Grady Rice and Susie McCoy Rice, her brothers Tom Rice and Paul Rice; sister Mattie Rice, and her husband Elton Waring.
She is survived by her daughter Jan Waring Palfreyman (Bill), their children Tessa and Brandon, son Don Waring (Vicki) and their children Lori and Alan and daughter Sue Beth Waring Johnson and her children Christina Johnson Neeley (Bill) and Lucas. Six great grandchildren, Marlowe, Roman, Benjamin, Jason, Eliza, and Peyton Neeley.
She was a graduate of Blue Mountain, College. Her career was teaching elementary school. She owned and operated a private kindergarten for 13 years. She also was a teacher assistant in Tylertown Primary School. Before her retirement, she was Coordinator of the Walthall County Adult Literacy program, Volunteer activities include the County Food Pantry, Walthall County Library, and Walthall County Hospital.
Her community activities included membership in the Cosmopolitan Club and membership on the Garden Guild. She was President of Tri-County Medical Auxiliary, Officer of the PTA, President of the Brookhaven District United Methodist Women, and Member of Friends of the Library. She was a member of Tylertown United Methodist Church for over 50 years where she taught Sunday School ranging from elementary to adult. She was the first woman lay leader in the church. She was a member of the Seekers Club in the church and the Benevolence Committee. In 2004, she was awarded Teacher of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce.
Five years ago, she moved to the MS Gulf Coast, and lived at Santa Maria Del Mar, independent living apartments, and then moved to Seashore Highlands, assisted living. In her last few weeks, she was in a personal care home in Gulfport. We would like to thank St. Joseph Hospice and the caretakers at Greg Sullivan’s personal care home.

The Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Tylertown United Methodist Church, Tylertown, MS. The visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 at the church. Interment following the service will be at Tylertown Cemetery.
