Hattie Johnson, 102, died Jan. 30, 2020, at the Jefferson Davis Community Hospital ECF. She was a native of Jefferson Davis County and a resident of Prentiss. She was born Oct. 21, 1917, to the late Garfield and Rachael Jackson-Ross, the fourth of seven children.
A service was Feb. 2, 2020, at Blackmon C.M.E. Temple with interment in Green Grove Church Cemetery, Prentiss, pastor Maxine Price officiating.
As a young girl Hattie received her early education in the White Sand School. Hattie accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age and was a member of Mt. Zion MB Church.
Hattie’s family farmed the land and although this limited her education it enhanced her strong work ethic and character. As a young woman Mrs. Johnson worked to provide for her and her only son Kermit as well as provide for her mother and sibilings. She worked in Gulfport for several years before returning home to marry and build a life with Refford Johnson. She enjoyed farming and spending time with friends and family. Mrs. Johnson loved serving God, and after marriage became a lifelong member of Green Grove MB Church in Prentiss. She had a strong passion for fashion and shopping at Hudson Salvage.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Refford Johnson, only son, Kermit Newsome; five sisters Beulah Wiggins, Pearlie Sullivan, Eva Price, Annie, and Lovie Ross; two brothers, Homer Ross and SL Ross; and great-great grandson, Christian McIntosh.
Survivors are her daughter-in-law Calmetta Newsome; six grandchildren: Sedrick (Terry) Armstrong, Felecia (Sammy) Washington, Terrance Hyde, Katrina (Perry) Grady, LaVarshia (Henderson) Pittman, Chauncey (Mina) Newsome, and Christian (Farnell) Hines; 16 great-grandchildren; Corey, Jamal, and Sederick Armstrong Jr, Antonio Henderson, Jermel, Jeremy, and Jeremiah Hyde, Keri Barron, Kirbi and Kasi, McIntosh, Xavier Pittman, Jada, Junia, and Chauncey Newsome, Jr., Jaden Russell, Lauryn and Kylan Hines; five great-great grandchildren; Kinsley, Preston, and Tristan Hyde; Chase Grady and Grace Barron.
