Herbert Earl Simmons, 71, of Tylertown, died July 29, 2021, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg.
Born May 14, 1950, in Tylertown, he was the son of the late Benton Simmons and Willie Earl Jefferson Simmons.
He was a member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. In 1970 Simmons married Barbara Cotton and they had one child, Herbert Simmons Jr.
After graduating from JJ Gulledge High School in Tylertown, he spent time in New Orleans before being drafted into the U.S. Army. He served from July 1970 until Feb. 1972 as a Private First Class in the 1st Battalion, 13th Infantry and was honorably discharged. He remained in the Army Reserves until July 1976. The U.S. Army recognized Simmons with the National Defense Service, Good Conduct and Sharpshooter (Rifle M-16) medals.
After being discharged he moved back to New Orleans where he worked as a supervisor at Hurwitz Mintz furniture store. He later moved to Los Angeles, CA.
He worked for several years rehabbing houses while in California. He moved with his nephew Robert Jones to Palmdale, Calif., and then to Tylertown. He also lived in Michigan for a while before again returning to Tylertown.
Survivors are his son, Herbert Simmons Jr. (Latonia); daughters, LaToya Simmons and Ashley Simmons; sister Gaynell Magee (Percy); five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, W.B. Jones and Roy Lee Jones; one sister-in-law, Emma Simmons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Vera Simmons, Nezzie Crumedy, Meneva Jones, Allah V. Jones and Louvenia Solomon; two brothers, Benton Simmons Jr. and Anderson Simmons.
A graveside service was Aug. 7, 2021 at Mt. Moriah MBC Cemetery, interment to follow.
Washington Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
