Mary Lou Harris-Davis
Oct. 20, 1942 – Feb. 6, 2022
Mary Lou Harris-Davis, 79, of Jayess, died Feb. 6, 2022, at Baptist Medical Center, Jackson. She was born Oct. 20, 1942, in Walthall County to the late Prentiss Harris Sr and Ethelene Harris.
While in school she was crowned Little Miss Hope Quinn and was also on the basketball team. She worked in the fields and assisted her parents in caring for her younger siblings.
She married the love of her life, Dennis Arlen Davis Sr., and moved to New Orleans. After several other moves, the family was able to move back home to Jayess.
She worked in organizations with her husband to fight for the underprivileged people, at times holding NAACP meetings and hosting Freedom Riders in their home. She worked in voter registration drives, provided voters rides to the polls and ensured poll workers had rides to their assigned locations and were fed.
She founded the Calla Club in her backyard with likeminded women of God to uplift one another and help others in the community. She worked for CMA Family Medicine Clinic and would voluntarily patrol the community and take blood pressures and check glucose numbers. When the Jayess and Hope communities were hit hard by a hard tornado, Mrs. Davis collected baskets with items to assist those in need.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Arlen Davis Sr.; daughters, Pamela Ann Davis and Dr. Arlen Jean Davis-Cooper; one granddaughter, Emoni Davis; a special aunt, Celestine Cowart; friends, Iola Montgomery and Bobbie Walker; grandparents, Callie and Elnora Harness; siblings, Albert, Prentiss Jr., Marie, Edward and Perry.
