Ora Lee Barnes, of Dallas, TX, died July 23, 2022. She was born to the late Samuel and Elizabeth Ellzey Washington Nov. 24, 1937, in Tylertown.
She joined St. Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. She met Caldwell Barnes after completing high school and they were married Sept. 27, 1956. They moved to Gary, IN, and had four children.
They returned to Mississippi in 1971 with their four children. She sang in the choir and became the church secretary at New Hope MB Church. She also worked at Eva Gordon Elementary School and retired from there in the late 1990s.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Caldwell Barnes; 12 siblings, Sam Jr., J.W., George, James, William, Bernice, Edrina, Alma, Gloria, Annie Rose, Nadean and Nellie Mae; daughter-in-law, Geneva (Don) Barnes; great granddaughter, Arianna Ellis.
Survivors are four children, Debra (Jerry) Gill of Spring, TX; Don Barnes of Grand Prarie, TX, Anthony (Tonya) Barnes of Hephzibah, GA, and Patricia (Johnny) Wells of Grand Prairie, TX; 13 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth Washington Smith of McComb; two sisters-in-law, Annie Washington of Osyka, and Emma Lee Washington of Houma, LA.
A funeral service was July 30, 2022, at St. Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
Pallbearers were Anthony Barnes Jr., Roderick Bearden, Andrae Barnes, Vernon Barnes, Evan Wells, Jessie Barnes Jr, James Brock Jr. and George Washington III.
Honorary pallbearers were Don Barnes, Anthony Barnes, Johnny Wells and Jerry Hill.
Washington Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
