Jewel Wayne Phillips, 71, a resident of Sandy Hook, died July 4, 2023, at his home. Wayne was born Feb. 8, 1952, and was a longtime active member of Monroe’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He was very instrumental in constructing the new church building after a fire destroyed the prior sanctuary.
He worked at the Bogalusa paper mill for many years and enjoyed antique cars and all types of hunting, in his earlier years.
Survivors are his wife of 42 years: Shelia Passman Phillips; two sons: Everet (Kayli) Phillips and Rodney Phillips; daughter Melissa (Greg) Peters; three grandsons: Luke Phillips, Logan Phillips, Dylan Peters; six granddaughters: Karly Phillips, Leah Phillips, Bailey Peters, Reagan Peters, Addie Peters, Paisley Peters; mother: Mattie Smith Penton; four brothers: Mike (Linda) Phillips, Stanley (Bonnie) Phillips, Percy (Mary) Penton, Terry (Penny) Penton; two sisters: Phyllis (Huey) Newcomb, Pam Wolfe; sisters and brothers in law: Joannie (Reggie) Williams, Jimmy and Virginia Passman, Carolyn (Larry) King, Preston (Sarah) Rushing.
He was preceded in death by his father Julius Phillips, brother Lloyd Penton, grandfather Percy Smith, nephew Alvin Phillips.
Funeral services were at Monroe’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church July 7, 2023, with Bro. Mark Harrison, Bro. Jason Matheny and Bro. Mark Hobgood officiating, burial in the Penton/Phillips Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Preston Rushing, Chance King, Mickey Thomas, Michael Berry, Chase Thomas, Brandon Stogner.
Honorary pallbearer was Roy Mullett.
