Hettie McKenzie Sawyer, 90, of Sandy Hook, died Sept. 5, 2023, in Hattiesburg. She was born and lived the duration of her entire life on her family hill in the Improve community.
Funeral services were Sept. 7, 2023, at Carson Springs Baptist Church, burial in Carson Springs Cemetery, Bro. Carl Dickens and Bro. Archie Herrin officiating.
She was a housewife and care giver for her family and a longtime member of Carson Springs Church. Always willing to cook anytime it was needed for anyone in the community, she was known for her cornbread dressing, German chocolate cake and coconut cake.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Ben Sawyer, Jr.; her parents Recie and Francis McKenzie; two sisters Esie (Nathan) Lott and Hilda (Fred) Fortenberry.
Survivors include her daughter Gwendolyn Sawyer; special nieces Mary Warner, Mona Clark, Pat Cordell, and Debbie Simmons; nephew Larue Lott.
Pallbearers were Bill Warner, Jimmy Cordell, Paul Manning, Josh Craddock, John Talley, and Clayton Breland.
Special music was performed by Robert Schepers and Tori Stogner.
