James (Moot) Roosevelt Ratliff, Sr. died Sept. 1, 2023. He was born Feb. 8, 1951, to the late Eddie Will and Clar Eva Ratliff in Tylertown.
He received his formal education at Walthall County School District at St Paul and JJ Gulledge High School. Ratliff attended SpringHill C.O.G.I.C of Tylertown as a child. He later accepted Christ and joined Darbun Community Worship Center.
He considered himself a car doctor, he was also known as “Mr. Fix It”. Ratliff started working at an early age, his first job at Bender’s Bakery. He later became a longshoreman at the port of New Orleans. He also worked at the family owned full-service gas station where many customers came to purchase gasoline, get vehicle repairs, car washes, purchase snacks, and sometimes just to chitchat. He was a self-employed mechanic from the early 90’s until his health failed. He was also the blueprint to the Ratliff Auto, LLC, owned and operated by his three sons.
Survivors are Mary Louise Yarborough Ratliff, four children, Shenikki (Tony) Thornton, Shedrick (Takeetchala) Ratliff, James (Lee Ann) Ratliff, Shannan (Phylicia) Ratliff, one God Son Kendaruis (KJ) Carr, a special daughter in love Courtney; seven brothers Eddie, Billy (Stella), Jimmy (Tuloha), Benjamin (Emmalean), Jessie (Vadie), Curtis, and Certis Ratliff; four sisters Pearlie R. Campbell (Charles), Anita R Lowe (Toxie), Eddiereen R. Barconey, and Samantha R. Crockett; one uncle Benton (Peggy) Ratliff; one aunt Maxine R. Bearden; 10 grandchildren A’Kecianna Thornton, Catavious Ratliff, Braeden Ratliff, Jayla Ratliff, Shannan Ratliff, Jr., A’Keila Thornton, Kyzlan Ratliff, Elijah Ratliff, Alison Thornton, Kaylee Choyce Ratliff; two great grandchildren A’Maya Thornton and A’Vayah Sturkey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson Anthony Josiah (AJ) Thornton; his father and mother-in-law Howard and Ola Mae Yarborough; his sister Mardina Ratliff Peters; his brother Earnest Ratliff; his brothers-in-law Lover Carr, Thomas “TP” Peters, Johnny Ray “Sonny” Yarborough, Paul Robinson, and Johnell Crockett; one sister in law Missionary Georgean Ratliff; one uncle Esco Ratliff; three nephews Emmanuel Ratliff, Anthony, and Spencer Ratliff; four nieces Brandi Smith, Janice Ratliff, Shawanda Ratliff, and Bobby Jean Ratliff.
