Walthall County reaches D4 exceptional drought

Livestock owners in Walthall County are eligible to apply for 2023 Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) benefits on summer pasture acreage for grazing that have occurred from losses due to extreme drought the County is currently suffering at their local USDA Farm Service Agency office in Tylertown. Walthall County received a D4 Exceptional drought designation last week through the U.S. Drought Monitor. USDA uses the drought monitor to assess drought conditions in the Country. The signup is underway and will continue through Jan. 30, 2024.
LFP provides compensation to eligible livestock producers who suffer eligible grazing losses for covered livestock due to drought on privately owned or cash leased land. County committees can only accept LFP applications after notification is received by the National Office of qualifying drought. Walthall County has now received this notice.
To apply for assistance in the Farm Service Agency Livestock Forage Program eligible livestock owners and producers must complete a CCC-853 application and the required supporting documentation such as reporting the number of owned weaned livestock on hand and completing a late filed acreage report if not currently on file.
Producers who lease grazing land must also provide a copy of their leases. Contract growers must provide a copy of their grower contract to determine eligibility.
This information must be provided at the time of signup no later than 30 calendar days after the end of the calendar year in which the grazing losses occurred or Jan. 30, 2024. Losses must have occurred during this drought. Their are no late filed provisions.
Interested livestock producers should contact their local FSA Office by calling 601-876-0962 Ext. 2 before visiting the FSA Office to find out what they will need to bring in to sign up and to set up their appointment.
