Youth football league starts regular season
Regular season play is underway for Walthall Youth Football.
“We played in a jamboree last weekend, just running a few plays to give the kids some game experience,” said spokesman Scotty Smith.
The league was set to open with their first regular season game against Purvis last Saturday on the Purvis field.
Smith said signup has ended for the league, and Walthall is fielding four age-specific teams.
“We have a 5-6 year old team; 7-8 year olds, 9-10 year olds and finish out with an 11-12 year old squad,” he said.
Much like Dixie Youth baseball acts as a feeder league for area high school teams, Smith says the goal of the youth football league is to train kids in the basics of the sports, provide them with a playing venue through elementary school, allowing for kids with a knowledge of the basics of football to progress to the junior high football ranks.
