With district contests yet to begin, both Walthall County teams lost last Friday night.
Salem’s Wildcats, still looking for their first win after four winless seasons, suffered a 40-26 defeat by West Lincoln.
The Wildcats hope to change things with hopes of heading into the winning column this week.
Friday night the Wildcats play Brookhaven Academy on home turf for their 2023-24 homecoming game.
Homecoming activities take place prior to kickoff and during halftime. The Wildcats go into the game with 0-4 record on the season.
Friday’s game represents the mid-point in the Wildcats’ 23-24 campaign.
The Tylertown Chiefs dropped a game with Harrison Central over the weekend, bringing their record for the season to 1-3.
Facing a strong Gulfport Red Rebels team, the Chiefs managed to go ahead by two points midway through the game only to fall behind within a few minutes as Harrison Central answered with a touchdown.
The Chiefs still suffer in the extra point category. Failed extra points have cost them the lead at several points throughout the season. Friday night was no different as the Red Rebels successfully converted on all but one attempt.
The Red Rebel’s kicker was 100% on point-after kicks. The lone extra point missed by an attempted two point conversion run that was stopped by the Chiefs.
Penalty-wide, the Chiefs have improved since early in the season. Early on in the season the Chiefs suffered several personal foul penalties, giving up a costly 15 yards each time a PF flag was thrown.
Friday’s game was somewhat different with both the Gulfport school and the Chiefs accessed two PF penalties in the game.
The quarter by quarter breakdown had the Chiefs trailing by eight, 14-6 at the end of the first quarter. At halftime, Gulfport had a 10 point lead over the Chiefs, 28-18.
Following the halftime break, the Rebels added another 20 points answered by 12 Chiefs’ points. The score going into the final quarter had the Chiefs trailing by 18, 48-30.
Each team added a single TD in the final period of the game, but the Chiefs missed their extra point try, ending with the final score of 55-36 in a high scoring, non-district contest before a home crowd.
