Town board accepts hotel renovation bid

Hanco Corp, the construction company presently at work renovating the Walthall Courthouse, was the low bidder to renovate the former Walthall Hotel.
Known as the “Old Hotel Project, aldermen voted to accept a total bid” of $763,000, made up of the base bid of $525,000, and add Alternate No. 2 for $278,000.
The base bid calls for restoration of the building to protect it from the weather, while the bid for –Alternate No. 2 is to restore the colonnade—a porch and walkway–the open area of the building that was once shaded by a roof, serving as outdoor seating for guests when the building was originally constructed and opened as a hotel in the late 1920s.
Aldermen accepted the bids as recommended by Waycaster & Associates, Architects and Dungan Engineering.
Senate Bill 2971, passed by the legislature, provides a $500,000 grant from the state to aid in the restoration of what is described as one of the town’s historic structures.
The board agreed to a payment of $21,909 for services provided in conjunction with the project.
