Pastor James Keith Jefferson Sr., 58, of Tylertown, died Dec. 15, 2023, in Hattiesburg. He was born Dec. 16, 1964, in Walthall County, the youngest of children to the late Supt. Otha L. Jefferson and Bertha Mae Cowart Jefferson.
Jefferson moved to New Orleans as a child but returned to Tylertown where he became a Salem Attendance Center 1982 graduate.
He started playing the guitar at an early age and also became a drummer. He began working while in high school at Pevey Gas Station. In 1984 he and his father became owner of Jefferson and Sons Service Station, and in 1989 he opened Bertha Mae’s Country Muffler Shop. He also worked as a bus driver for Walthall Co. School Dist. and retired in 2021.
On Dec. 7, 1996, he married Helen Denise Washington Jefferson, and they had six children. Jefferson was ordained as an elder on Aug. 27, 2003, by the late Bishop A.V. Jordan. In 2008, he became the pastor of St. John #2 COGIC. He also served as chairman of the Magnolia District under Supt. Glenn Allen.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Ford Jefferson.
Survivors are his wife 27 years, Helen Jeferson; six children, Jermaine O. (Kelly) Peters of Philadelphia, PA, James K. (LaKeshia) Jefferson Jr. of McComb, Iesha L. (Branden) Simmons of Brandon, LaToya (Syleary) Campbell of Tylertown, Jessica D. (Jummonie) Smith of Clinton, and Brandon J. Smith of Tylertown; one brother, Evone (Gilda) Jefferson of Vacherie, LA; two sisters, Rosa M. (Harvey) Cleaves of Baton Rouge, Rhoda A. (Luther) Gatlin of Tylertown; two friends, Supt. Glenn (Sandra) Allen and pastor Ronnie (Mary) Magee of Tylertown; 16 grandchildren; two God daughters, Shantina (Ernest) Robertson Brister and Destiny Magee; mother-in-law, Norah Quinn; sister-in-law, Brenda James.
Funeral services were Dec. 31, 2023, at Southwest Event Center, Bishop Kenneth Preston officiating with interment in the Tylertown Cemetery.
