Tylertown’s Chiefs have as long history of top performing track and field teams over the years, dating back to the early 1970s when the former Tylertown and Gulledge high schools combined as one unit and adopted the Chiefs moniker.
Leon “Pop” Magee recognized as the godfather of track in the county, pushed track events as a sport unto itself, long before it started gaining popularity.
Today, Magee is considered a visionary, as he realized that tracksters also benefitted from the stamina and agility required in other events, especially when competing in other sports, primarily football and basketball.
Since then, other athletic directors and coaches haven seen the benefit of Magee’s eye toward the future, and today’s track teams consists of top performers from the schools other athletic squads.
Tylertown High school track teams competed in the 3A State Tournament at Pearl last week with both boys and girls scoring first place.
It’s the fifth straight state 3A win for the Chiefs, and the first state win for the girls in recent years as their last state win came in 2017.

Then, beginning in 2021 the Chiefs again dominated 3A track, turning in their fifth consecutive win this year.
