City election June 3

City voters will only have to contend with one election this year—the general election June 3—as there was no opposition in party primaries and most candidates elected to run as independents.
That means candidates with opposition will face each other in the June 3 municipal general election.
Mayor Ed Hughes is running as an independent and will meet Democratic challenger Jasper Howard.
Alderman-at-Large Lib Duncan is opposed by Kyle Johnson. Both are independents.
In the first ward, Republican Douglas “Scott” Barnum, is running against Chelcy Naquin and incumbent Doug Walker, both independents; in ward two, Stormy Jefferson is unopposed as an independent; in ward three, independent Fred Lambert is unopposed; and in ward four, incumbent Frederick Magee Jr. is running as a Democrat against independent challenger Joseph (Jed) Jefferson.
In the general election, there is no runoff—the candidate with the highest number of votes—the high man—wins.
Absentee voting is underway at city hall for those who qualify as absentee voters. The last day for in person absentee voting is Saturday, May 31, 8 a.m.-noon at city hall.
Balloting on election day takes place at city hall with polls open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
