Graveside services for Uta Holmes Grubbs, 94, who served as the music accompanist at Tylertown Baptist Church for over 60 years will be Wednesday, July 22, 2020, 10 a.m., at Tylertown Cemetery with Rev. Justin Knight officiating.
Mrs. Grubbs began as church pianist before graduating high school and later became the church organist. Over the years she played for numerous weddings and funerals in the community. She was a recipient of the Ilene Jaubert Award from the Walthall Chamber of Commerce.
A 1943 graduate of Tylertown High School, Mrs. Grubbs received her Bachelor of Music Degree from Louisiana State University in 1947. She returned to
Tylertown and taught piano in the Walthall County School System for many years. In 1972, she began teaching piano at Walthall Academy until her retirement. She was a member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers, and many of her students always placed as National Finalists in the National Piano Playing Auditions. She was also a supporter of the Community Concert Series in McComb.
She died July 19, 2020 at Diversicare of Tylertown. She was born Sept. 15, 1925, at Tylertown, daughter of the late Henry W. and Velma Smith Holmes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul H. Grubbs.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, reading, watching LSU football, playing card games and Mexican Dominoes.
Mrs. Grubbs is survived by her daughter, Paulette (Fred) Johnson; grandchildren, Paul Johnson and Jennifer (Chad) Luter; and great-granddaughter, Emma Leigh Luter, all of Tylertown.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tylertown Baptist Church Music Fund.
