The field of local candidates running in the November general election has been finalized with the closing of the qualifying window.
Circuit Clerk Vernon Alford said at the close of qualifying the listing of local candidates, including the regular school board election for district five; election commissioners from all five districts; and two special elections–fourth district school board and district five supervisor had been finalized.
All five election commissioners had qualified with no opposition. Commissioners Elizabeth Cowart, first district; Ricky Dowell, second district; William Ratliff, third district; Christy Alford Planche, fourth district; and Paulette Hammond Jackson, fifth district, will be on the Nov. 3 ballot.
Zackery Fortenberry, qualified for the district five school board member position as the only candidate. Incumbent Jeffre Conerly did not seek reelection.
For the special election for fourth district school board member, three candidates qualified to run: Jerry L. Holmes, Denise Ainsworth and Ella Faye Martin. They are running for the seat formerly held by the late Eldredge Boyd.
Seven candidates have qualified for the special election for fifth district supervisor to replace Clennel Brown, who resigned for health reasons. The seven include Lloyd C. Bullock, Larry Q. Bridges, Jermaine Pittman, Billy Bridges, Donnie Smith, Shelby (Bo Jack) Gatlin and Randy Harrell. The post is held by Clifton “Pop” Carr, who was appointed by the board to serve until a replacement is chosen by special election.
