Johnie B. Hughes, 84, of Tylertown, died Feb. 3, 2022, in Hattiesburg after a brief illness. Hughes was born Oct. 10, 1937, in Vossburg to the late Lucious and Marzella Hughes.
On May 16, 1956, he joined the U.S. Army, and on May 15, 1962, he was honorably discharged.
He began working at the Masonity Plant for a period of time. He later moved to New Orleans and married Laverne Hughes Dec. 21, 1967.
In 2002, he and his wife moved to Tylertown, where he joined St. Paul MBC where he served on the usher board, was ordained as a deacon, received his Diploma of Christian Training and perfect attendance in 2017 from Harper Baptist Seminary. He also was a funeral attendant with Craft Funeral Home and Washington Funeral Home over the years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Etha Mae Kitchens and Bertha Lee Taylor; six brothers, James, Willie B. Samuel, Tommy Lee, Luther and T.J. Hughes.
Survivors are his wife of 54 years, Laverne Hughes of Tylertown; sister-in-law, Leonteen Brister Turner of New Orleans; three God-daughters, Troy Lynn Mark-White (Shakor), Nicola Mark and Wendy Mark, all of New Orleans; one daughter, Terry Hughes-Jones (Derrick Sr.); grandchildren, Derrick Jr. and Darrell Jones, of New Orleans; four great grandchildren; one sister, Ella Mae Bradford of Forrest; one brother, Archie (Mary) Hughes of Vossburg; sisters-in-law, Vernell Hughes of Laurel, Lelamae Smith (Herbert) of Tylertown, Senamae Lewis of Baton Rouge, LA.
Funeral services were February 12, 2022, at St. Paul MB Church, Rev. Isiah Jones will officiating, interment in the church cemetery.
