Essie Lee Cartwright Brumfield, 80, of Gambrills, MD, died Nov. 10, 2022 at Chesapeake Hospice Impatient in Pasadena, MD. She was born Sept. 18, 1942, in Longview, TX, to the late Essie Bell Smith and Joe Cartwright.
As a military wife, she lived in various places around the world and finally settled in Tylertown where she became a member at Mt. Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. She later moved to St. James Missionary Baptist Church.
She worked as an administrative assistant for the Walthall County Superintendent of Education for 21 years. She served as president of the Administrative Assistants Board Clerks organization, which is an auxiliary of the Mississippi School Board Assn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, James Willis Brumfield Jr.; her sister, Joan Cartwright-Wilson; stepfather, Hilliard Smith.
Survivors are her two sons, Kerry Jay Brumfield, San Antonio, TX, and Shawn Willis Brumfield (Christie), Gambrills, MD; six grandchildren, Shanika Brumfield, Esp, San Antonio, TX, Kendra Brumfield-O’Berry (Veronica), Augusta, SC, James N. Brumfield, Glen Burnie, MD, Nadia Borgo, New Orleans, Christopher and Kaila Brumfield, Gambrills, MD; two great grandchildren, Cayden and Miles Brumfield, Glen Burnie, MD; two brothers, Bobby R. Smith Sr. (Janice), Rowlett, TX, and Jackie Lynn Smith of Lancaster, TX.
Funeral services were Dec. 3, 2022, at Mount Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in Tylertown, with interment in Bridges Family Cemetery in Tylertown.
