King parade, observance planned

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is being observed Monday, Jan. 16, this year with a downtown parade followed by a program at Southwest Events Center, concluding with the presentation of three civic awards given by Tylertown First Baptist Church, the event sponsor.
Awards presented include the Humanitarian, Leadership and Business if the Year.
“The parade will begin at 1 p.m., stepping off from the area in front of Heavenly Delight, proceeding north on Franklinton Street, then turning east on Beulah Avenue and concluding at Southwest Events Center,” said Tasha Bullock, a spokesman for the parade committee. “We encourage participation by anyone or any group, horse riders, youth, church and school groups, bands, athletic teams and others.”
There is no charge to enter the parade, but participants will need to register. Register in advance at the Tylertown First Baptist Church Facebook page. For those not technically savvy, participants can register by picking up a form at Washington Funeral Home, Shondele Style or the church office on Beulah Avenue near the hospital.
For information call the church office at 601-876-3110; or contact Shelby Smith, 303-9113.
