Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans event: Remembering our Vietnam Veterans is this Saturday, March 30, at 12 noon at Harvest Time Guesthouse, 413 Hwy 98 West, Tylertown.

Brigadier General Retired Bobby Thornton
Post 79 Wesson, MS
Thornton, a Veteran of over 33 years service, spent most of his career with the Army National Guard serving in various positions of responsibility. He has served as an Auditor, Contracting Officer, Financial Manager and Comptroller. In 2004, Mr. Thornton was mobilized with the ARNG at Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center where he served in various roles, including the Director of Resource Management, the Deputy Commander for Mobilization, the Deputy Garrison Commander for Installation, and the Acting Commander. He retired after 33 years in uniform at the rank of Colonel and was awarded the honorary rank of Brigadier General. In addition, he was awarded the U.S. Army Legion of Merit and the Mississippi Magnolia Cross in 2010.
After leaving uniformed service, Thornton immediately began work for the U.S. Army as a Federal Civil Service employee. Since 2010, he has worked for the Army and for the Department of Homeland Security, Citizenship and Immigration Services and is currently working as the Chief, Mission Support Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Thornton’s civilian awards include the U.S. Army Commander’s Award for Civilian Service, the U.S. Army Superior Civilian Service Award and the 40-year Civilian Service Pin. Thornton is a lifetime member of the National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS), a member of the American Society of Military Comptrollers (ASMC), Wesson Lions Club and is a Paid Up for Life (PUFL) member of The American Legion.
Within the American Legion, Brigadier General Retired Thornton is the Commander of the Drane-Prine American Legion Post 79, Wesson, the District 7 Commander and is serving at the Department of Mississippi American Legion, Department Finance Officer. He is also currently serving as the President of the Wesson Lions Club. Thornton is an active member of Sylvarena Baptist Church where he serves as a Deacon, on the Finance Committee and is a Church Trustee.
Thornton holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration (B.S.B.A) from Mississippi College, a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Jackson State University and a Master’s in Strategic Science (MSS) from the U. S. Army War College.
Thornton is married to Dixie Hutson Thornton of Wesson and is the father of Emily L. Thornton of Hattiesburg.
