Opal Mae Burnett Cothern was born Jan. 10, 1937, in the community of Enon, where she spent her formative years. She attended Enon High School graduating valedictorian of her class. She later went to business school in Jackson, working as an administrative assistant and retiring from Housing and Urban Development.
In her free time, Mrs. Cothern enjoyed gardening. In her retirement she and Leroy returned to their home community of Enon and built her dream home, where they started Gran and Pop’s Peaches. Additionally, Opal was an active member of Enon Baptist Church, volunteering, teaching and serving wherever there was a need.
Survivors are her husband, Leroy Cothern and her child Chris Cothern, daughter-in-law Traci Cothern, son-in-law Clifford Sumrall and her grandchildren, Shan Michael Cothern and Addie Marie Cothern.
She was preceded in death by her parents – Leslie Estel Burnett and Addie Lee Burnett; her children – Debbie Sumrall, Michael Leroy Cothern and Betty Carol Cothern; her granddaughter – Jessica Renee Sumrall; siblings – Hoyt Burnett, Dolan Burnett and Violet Rae Burnett.
Funeral services were July 10, 2024 at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram, graveside at Enon Cemetery, Jayess.
Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram was in charge of the arrangements.
