Low turnout of voters elects new alderman-at-large

Only about 30% of city voters took part in Tylertown’s municipal election last week that saw longtime Mayor Edward Hughes returned to office.
The town election commission said 321 voters cast ballots over the 12 hour period polls were open at city hall..
Hughes defeated challenger Jasper Howard 243-59.
Alderman-at-Large Lib Duncan was unsuccessful in her re-election bid, defeated by a newcomer to city politics, Kyle Johnson, who won by a 151-134 spread.
In a three-way race for alderman, Ward 1, incumbent Doug Walker managed to survive a challenge by Douglas “Scott” Barnam and Chelcy Naquin. Walker led with 52 votes, while Barnum had 45 votes and Naquin, 15. In Mississippi municipal general elections, the candidate with the most votes—the high man—wins. There is no runoff.
Stormy Jefferson was unopposed in ward two, where she chalked up 48 votes; Fred Lambert received 52 votes in ward three, where he had no opposition.
In ward four, incumbent Frederick Magee Jr. held off a challenge by Joseph (Jed) Jefferson, 53-38.
