Derek L. Cowart, 44, of Jayess, died Aug. 22, 2025, in Jackson. He was born Aug. 4, 1981, in McComb to Kimberly Cowart and the late Ellis Lee Ratliff.
Cowart attended Salem and Tylertown playing basketball and running track. He was a construction worker for numerous construction companies including Jeff-Co Construction.
He is preceded in death by his father, Ellis Lee Ratliff; grandmother, Tassie V. Cowart; great grandmother, Celestine H. Cowart; uncles, Al Douglas Ratliff and Willie E. Harness.
Survivors are his mother, Kimberly Cowart-(Johnny) James; wife, Glenda W. Cowart; son, Prince J. Lewis; daughter, Destiny L. Cowart; seven extended children Terriesha, LaReesha, Adoria, Denzall, Kendall, Joseph and Harlem; God-sister, Bonita Jefferson; grandparents, Ellis and Sarah Ratliff; two aunts, Sabrina R. McClain and LaWanda G. Ward; three uncles, Robert Ratliff, Marcus Jr., and Christopher Green; special great uncle, Robert E. Harness.
Funeral services were Sept. 6, 2025, at West Holy Hill COGIC, Jayess, pastor Terry Bridges officiating, interment in Cowart Estates Cemetery.
