Chalmers O “Chim” Stogner, 75, died in Gulfport on July 2, 2026. He was born Sept. 26, 1950, in Tylertown.
A memorial service was held at Hartman-Hughes Funeral Home in Tylertown on July 18, 2026.
Chim was preceded in death by his parents, Olson and Helen Stogner; his sister, Judy Staggs; grandparents, Chalmers and Bertha Stogner; and brother, Fred and Mamie Applewhite.
He is survived by his brother-in-law, Dr. David Staggs; nephew, Jody Staggs, wife Ashley, and daughter Catherine; Jenna Staggs Wertz and children Truitt and Tucker; and by niece Jamie Staggs and her children Riley, Carson, and Everette. Chim graduated from Tylertown High School and Southwest MS Community College. He was a teacher, coach, and businessman. He lived and worked at Hampton High School in Virginia and Suffolk schools after graduating from Virginia Tech. He lived for several years in Hattiesburg, was a USM graduate, lived in Tylertown, and resided in Gulfport, MS, most recently. He also coached and taught at Petal, at Hattiesburg Prep, and at South Panola High School. He was a member of Hattiesburg United Methodist Church, Oxford, MS University UMC, and Tylertown Baptist Church during stays in those cities.
Chim enjoyed being active in school, church, community, and business activities. In Hattiesburg, he coached Dixie Youth Baseball, was a former Vice President of the Hattiesburg USM Metro Alumni Association, was on the Board of the Oak Grove Athletic Booster Club, and was on the Aldersgate Board at Hattiesburg UMC. He was the owner of Market South Fundraising. He was named Phi Beta Kappa Mississippi Businessperson of the Year in 1990. In Hampton, VA, he coached championship football and baseball teams and was on the State Baseball Committee of the VA High School League. Stogner was an officer of the Peninsula District Coaches Assn. While at Virginia Tech, he was the head of the football staff at the VA Tech Sports Camp. He was also a co-captain of his high school and Southwest MS Community College Football teams.
