Joe Louis “The Fish Man” Gutter, 82 of Tylertown, died Sept. 14, 2021, at Walthall General Hospital in Tylertown.
Born Jan. 5, 1939, in Tylertown, he was the son of the late Hebrew Gutter, and the late Verlean Ratliff Gutter.
At an early age, he was baptized and became a member of West Sunny Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He later joined St. John #2 COGIC where he remained a member until his death.
Joe attended JJ Gulledge High School. At the age of 17 he was employed as a farm laborer with William L. Rand where he worked for over 30 years. He became known as the “fish man.” He was later employed by the Walthall County 5th District in Tylertown until his retirement.
He married Hattie L. Gutter July 5, 1958.
Survivors are his children, Matthew (Diane) Gutter, Martha A. (Levern) Gutter, Mary (Lucious Jr.) Jackson, all of Tylertown, Dwanna Gutter of Columbia, Shwanna (Kelvin) Jackson of Meridian, Shaketta (Lonnie) Thornton of Tylertown; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; one sister, Audrey Jefferson of New Orleans; one brother, R.D. Gutter of Tylertown; a daughter, Cynthia Denise Brumfield of Milwaukee, WI.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Gutter; one son, Anthony Joseph Gutter; two brothers, MC Gutter and Robert Gutter.
A funeral service was Sept. 19, 2021, at St. John #2 COGIC, with Eld. Keith Jefferson officiating and rendering the eulogy, interment in the West Sunny Hill MBC Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Matthew Gutter, R.D. Gutter, Lonnie Thornton, Billy Fortenberry, Lucious Jackson Jr., Kelvin Jackson and Levern Lee.
Honorary pallbearers were Alonzo Fortenberry, Lucious Jackson III, Martinez Gutter, Lontavious Thornton, LaMatthen Gutter, Cornelius Lee, Jeremiah Fortenberry and Sheldon Wilks.
Washington Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
