Maureen Rushing Spence, 81, of Monticello, died May 15, 2023, at the Lawrence County Hospital in Monticello. She was born March 20, 1942, in Tylertown.
Funeral services were May 18, 2023, at Bethel Baptist Church in Monticello, burial in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Monticello, Bro Wayne Painter officiating.
Maureen (also known as “Big Mamma”) loved to sing church hymns, hunt, fish, go thrift shopping, wood working, tell jokes, cook, go on trips, and watch old westerns. She was always the life of the party but always made sure everyone was taken care of first.
She was preceded in death by her father, Herman Rushing; mother, Lessie Smith; brothers, Rufus Rushing, Bill Rushing, Willie Rushing, James Rushing, Smith Rushing, Paul Rushing, Jerry Rushing, Herman Jr. Rushing; sisters, Sarah Rushing Sagor, Joyce Rushing Odom and Lessie Mae Rushing Rawls.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Harlan Spence of Monticello; three sons, Allen Spence (Sarah), Andy Spence (Tina), and David Spence (Stephanie) and one daughter, Emma Herz (John); one brother, Donald Rushing of McComb; and one sister, Beth Rushing Morrow of Tylertown; 13 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren.
Pallbearers were Adam Williams, Trevor Spence, Elisha Spence, Eddie Spence, Jesse Spence, Marcus Watson, and Scott Morrow.
Honorary pallbearers were John Watson, Thomas “Trey” Stanley, Zachary Gibson, Landon Alderman, Ronnie Wheless, and Ron Schrieber.
Wilson Funeral Home in Monticello was in charge of arrangements.
