Tigers dominate Chiefs; THS falls to McComb 45-6
Tylertown Chiefs fans found themselves in an unusual position over the Labor Day weekend as officials ordered the game clock to run non-stop for the second half, imposing the “Mercy Rule’ at the start of the third quarter as the McComb Tigers had built a 39-0 halftime lead over THS.
Not used to the “red-headed stepchild” treatments, the Chiefs had no choice.
In the past the Chiefs have been known for their passing attack and speed of their receivers as the O-Line protects the quarterback in the pocket to set the play.
But Aug. 29 Tylertown fans watched it crumble.
McComb was ready, breaking through to pressure quarterback Keonis Davis, forcing him to throw the ball away as Tigers’ defenders stayed on top of Chiefs’ receivers.
The Chiefs just weren’t prepared for a McComb team thad obviously studied the THS playbook.
McCombs anticipation of Tylertown’s plays and constant pressure wore down the visitors so that the Chiefs blew several scoring opportunities by falling victim to fumbles and misfires.
One such example came when McComb’s Shelton Isaac scooped up a loose ball caused by Tiger defenders and running it back 95 yards to set up a McComb touchdown.
Bowing to the constant pressure of McComb defense more than once turned what should have been Chiefs’ points into a Tigers’ score.
With the clock rooking through a short second half, Tylertown finally got on the board with six points in the third quarter.
Prior to the Chiefs’ third quarter points to avoid a shutout, the Chiefs’ faithful began to file out of the stadium before game’s end, getting an early start on their 20 minute trip east.
McComb also added two touchdowns in the final two quarters to end with a 45-6 Tiger victory.
The Chiefs were to travel north to Monticello Sept. 5 to play the Lawrence County Cougars.
