Hattie Lee Bates Garner, 90, of Jayess, died Feb. 10, 2020, at her residence in Jayess.
Born Feb 16, 1929, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Herman Bates and Linnie Stovall Bates.
She was married on Feb. 16, 1945, to Hosea Garner and to this union 13 children were born. She became a member of Galilee Church at an early age.
She always had a love for her church and her community. She sometimes provided refreshments for Sunday School and also hosted Annual Spring Dinners in March for several years. She was a member of the women ministry and served on the sick committee.
In addition to raising her children, Mrs. Garner was a housekeeper that took care of many families in the surrounding area. She also assisted her husband in farming and sharecropping and they would grow a garden and invite others to reap in their harvest. She was employed as a CNA at Billdora Nursing Home for many years until her husband’s health declined.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Hosea Garner; two sons, James and Gary Garner; two daughters, Janice and Georgia Garner Baylis; one son-in-law, J.D. Baylis; two grandsons, Jerry J Garner and Amazing Manning; two sisters, Ethel Wheeler and Claudine White; two brothers, Fred and Jewel Bates.
Survivors are five sons: Hugh (Pearl) Garner of California; Hosea, Gilbert (Patricia), Lamar (Shirley), Jerry (Kathy) all of Mississippi; four daughters: Elaine (Johnny) Franklin, Edna (Micheal) Ratliff, Joan Garner, Patsy G Tillman; 46 grandchildren; 71 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren; three sisters Dorothy (Albert) Nicks, Herman Lee Collins, Mary Manning; one brother Jimmy Bates; one sister-in-law, Min. Maybell Jackson; two aunts: Luralee Dupree and Edwina Bates.
A funeral service was Feb. 22. 2020, at Galilee Church of Christ Holiness USA, with Rev. Jeffre Conerly delivering the eulogy and officiating. Interment was in the Garner Family Cemetery in Jayess.
Pallbearers were Antonio Garner, Sherrod Hill, Jeremy Smith, Marcus Garner, Gil Garner, Colton Magee, Wayne Holloway and Terrence Jenkins.
Honorary pallbearers were Hugh Garner, Hosea Garner Jr., Lamar Garner, Jerry Garner, Michael Ratliff, Johnny Franklin, Jimmy Bates and Gilbert Garner.
Washington Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
